Description

3 and 3A Silverwells Crescent is a mid 19th century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan plain classical house, which has undergone later alterations and additions at the rear. The building is constructed from pink ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, featuring a base course and an eaves cornice. The windows are raised and moulded with architraves and raised cills, and the structure includes long and short quoins.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a slightly advanced, pilastered doorpiece with a plain frieze and cornice at ground level in the central bay. This features a deep-set timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight above, along with a window located directly above it on the first floor. There is a window in each of the flanking bays.

The south (rear) elevation is irregular with five bays, including an addition in the central bay. It has a square-plan lean-to porch accessed by dog-leg stairs in the central bay on the first floor, featuring a modern two-leaf door and a modern window in the left return, with narrow modern windows flanking it. There is a window in the ground bay, offset to the right, and a window at each floor in the outer right bay. A modern lean-to porch is located at ground level in the bay, offset to the left of centre, with a window at each floor in the outer left bay.

The west (side) elevation is a blank wall with a gablehead stack, while the east (side) elevation has a window at each floor in the bay to the right of centre, with a central gablehead stack above.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane, lying-pane timber sash and case, with some uPVC replacements at the rear. The roof is grey slate, with slate used for the additions, and features ashlar skews and coped gablehead stacks to the east and west, along with a tall ashlar stack to the south. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods, with some plastic replacements at the rear.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.

The property also features gatepiers and walls, consisting of two pairs of square-plan ashlar piers with flattened pyramidal caps on the left, and replacement rubble piers with flat copes on the right. There is a low sandstone rubble wall topped with squared ashlar coping.
