Description
The gate piers at Viewfield House in Dunfermline date from the early 19th century and served as the former entrance to the estate. They consist of a pair of square-plan gate piers featuring a classical frieze. The piers are made of coursed sandstone rubble with a polished sandstone ashlar outer elevation and dressings. The north elevation displays V-jointed masonry and a festooned frieze, while the frieze elsewhere includes triglyphs. Above the frieze is a moulded cornice or coping. The gates are made of timber and were added in the late 20th century. On either side of the gate piers, there are sandstone rubble walls; the wall to the west has an adjacent pedestrian entrance with a droved ashlar surround, while the wall to the east has been significantly reduced in height.
