Description
The gate piers next to number 1 on Pishiobury Drive date from the 18th century. They are two tall square stone piers that flank the entrance to the drive. Each pier has a low moulded base and is constructed from seven courses of V-jointed vermiculated rusticated masonry. Above this, there is a smooth dressed frieze beneath a projecting moulded cornice. At the top of each pier is a large stone ball finial from the late 19th century, which features a moulded circular foot set on an octagonal block, raised from a square base by concave swept broaches.
The facing sides of the piers each have an engaged dressed stone gate post with necking and a scrolled top, which connects to the second rusticated course from the top. After an accident in 1974, the reconstruction of the south pier revealed that it had a solid brick core encased in stone. A 19th-century photograph shows that the piers were originally topped with griffin heads facing inward, which were likely replaced by the current ball finials when the estate changed ownership.
