Description
The Straw Hat Restaurant, located on Harlow Road near the junction with Chaseways, is a 17th-century single-storey house with attics. It features a timber-framed structure with chevron panelled pargetting and a steep gabled thatched roof. There is a hipped thatched stable addition at the southern end. The building has two gabled dormers beneath the thatch and a main entrance opposite a large central stack, with a stair adjacent to it. The long service end includes a second fireplace that backs onto a through passage. The northern gable is weatherboarded and shows evidence of a purlin roof. The west front has two plank doors with heavy frames, and a rustic open porch is present at the southern door. The two-light windows are modern. Unstopped chamfered axial beams indicate that a floor was inserted in the 18th century. This building is a picturesque roadside house.
