Century House, 45 East Port, Dunfermline

Century House, located at 45 East Port in Dunfermline, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey building with a basement and attic. It has a rectangular plan and is detached, featuring a later extension to the west. The design is classical, characterized by Doric columns flanking the main entrance. The exterior is constructed from coursed droved sandstone with polished ashlar dressings on the basement and first floor of the principal (north) elevation, while the ground floor has channeled polished ashlar. The remaining elevations are finished in stugged and rockfaced sandstone, with some areas partially harled.

The principal elevation has a symmetrical arrangement, with steps leading up to the main entrance at ground floor level. The entrance is flanked by engaged Doric columns that support an entablature. The main door is a two-leaf panelled timber door with a border-glazed fanlight, and there are flanking windows on each floor, along with one above. There is a central entrance to the basement featuring a six-panel timber door. The later extension to the right is set back and has steps leading up to an architraved entrance with a single-panel timber door and border-glazed fanlight.

The south elevation includes a window in each bay at the basement, ground, and first floors. A later box dormer, which incorporates several windows, extends across most of the roof. The entrance and irregular fenestration of the single bay extension are slightly set back to the left.

On the east elevation, there is a single window on the right side of the first floor. The west elevation features a stair extension that projects to the center with a single stair window, while a later infill extension is set back slightly to the right. The end wall of the original building is set back to the left.

The building mainly has two-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with grey slate roofs. The later semi-mansard roof above the stair extension increases the interior space. There are pairs of gable end stacks with band courses on either side of the original block.

The interior was not inspected in 1998. The property is also adorned with cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lys type finials leading up to the main entrance on the north side of the original block, and these railings extend to the west in front of the stair extension.
