Description
Earlier 19th century. 2-storey with basement and attic; 3-bay; detached; rectangular-plan former house with later extension to W. Classical design with Doric columns flanking main entrance. Coursed droved sandstone with polished ashlar dressings to basement and 1st floor to principal (N) elevation; chanelled polished ashlar to ground floor; stugged and rockfaced sandstone (extension partly harled) elsewhere. Base course to basement and ground floor to principal elevation; band course above ground floor; eaves cornice. Slightly projecting cills to windows. Coped gables.
N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical arrangement. Steps up to main entrance to ground floor. Flanking engaged Doric columns supporting entablature. 2-leaf panelled timber door with border-glazed fanlight. Flanking windows to each floor and one above. Central entrance with 6-panel timber door to basement. Later extension set back to right. Steps up to architraved entrance; single-panel timber door with border-glazed fanlight.
S ELEVATION: window to each bay to basement, ground and 1st floors. Later box dormer incorporating several windows extends across most of roof. Entrance and irregular fenestration to single bay extension set back slightly to left.
E ELEVATION: single window to right of 1st floor.
W ELEVATION: stair extension projects to centre; single stair window. Later infill extension set back slightly to right. End wall of original building set back to left.
Mainly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs; later semi-mansard roof above stair extension extends space upwards. Pair of gable end stacks with band courses to either side (E and W) of original block.
INTERIOR: not inspected (1998).
RAILINGS: cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lys type finials up to main entrance (N side) of original block and along street; extended to W in front of stair extension.
