Description
Carston House, located at 1 Victoria Park in Ayr, dates from around 1848 and is a two-storey, three-bay classical villa with an asymmetrical plan. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone and features a base course, a central dividing band course, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, and a cornice. The window openings are architraved and include aprons and pediments on the southwest elevation above the first-floor windows, which rise into the roof.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there is a central entrance porch supported by Doric columns, topped with a balustraded parapet. The entrance features a timber door with a letterbox fanlight above, and there is a single window above the door. Flanking the porch are single windows on both floors in the outer bays.
The northwest elevation, facing Racecourse Road, has a canted central bay with a single window aligned above it on the first floor, and regular fenestration in the flanking bays. The building has modern glazing, a slate roof with circular fluted stacks and circular cans, and a linking arcaded balustrade. It also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1999.
Additionally, there is an ancillary structure to the southeast of the site, which is a single-storey and attic rectangular-plan building made of coursed sandstone with a slate roof. There are square-plan gatepiers for two entrances on Victoria Park, with two-leaf timber gates and ball-finials on the gatepiers. Modern iron gates are also present. A coped boundary wall encloses the site.
