Description
Morrison House is a later 19th-century mansion located at 2 Racecourse View in Ayr, featuring two storeys and five bays, along with single-storey and attic ancillary structures and a walled garden. The house is constructed from squared, coursed sandstone, with a base course, a central dividing band course, an eaves course, and broad eaves. The first-floor windows have aprons.
On the south elevation, steps lead to the entrance located in the penultimate bay to the right, which features a recessed channelled and architraved doorpiece, a timber door, and a small-paned fanlight. There is a single window aligned above on the first floor. To the left, there are two small-paned arched windows at ground level, with two single windows aligned above on the first floor. The outer right has tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with a bracketed cornice over the ground floor window and a bargeboarded low-pitched gablet over the first-floor window. The outer left has a bowed bay with single windows on all faces at both ground and first floors.
The east elevation has irregular fenestration and a variety of later additions to the outer right. The north elevation also features irregular fenestration and a flat-roofed modern addition to the left. The west elevation shows irregular fenestration with a doorway to the bays on the right, a large canted bay advanced to the left, and a window on the first floor behind. There is a modern addition to the outer left.
The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is piended with grey slate and lead ridges, featuring wallhead stacks and stacks that break the pitch with decorative Egyptian circular cans. The property includes cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1999. There are single-storey and attic ancillary structures to the northeast of the main house, along with a walled garden at the rear of the property and lean-to greenhouses to the north, adjacent to Victoria Park.
The entrance features paired gatepiers to the right, a detailed timber gate, and an iron gate leading to the walled garden, all enclosed by a coped boundary wall.
