Description

This building, located at 50 Racecourse Road in Ayr, is a detached villa from the later 19th century. It is two stories high, with an attic at the rear, and features three bays along with a single-storey wing to the right. The villa is constructed of ashlar stone, which is channelled at the ground floor, while the wing is made of squared, stugged sandstone. Architectural details include a base course, a central dividing band course, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, a modillion cornice, and pilastered quoins.

On the southeast elevation, there are steps leading to a central entrance porch supported by fluted Doric columns, which also features a modillion cornice and a balustraded parapet. The entrance includes a two-leaf timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it, and there is a single window aligned above on the first floor. The flanking bays have bipartite windows on both floors, while the wing to the right has a single corniced window and a balustraded parapet above it.

The northeast elevation shows the wing obscuring the ground floor and extending to the right, with a window located at the centre of the first floor. The northwest (rear) elevation has three bays for the main house. It features steps leading to a central entrance, which has been modified into an elongated window at the ground floor, with a single window above that is not aligned. There are three windows at both the ground and first floors in a bowed bay to the outer right, and single windows at both floors to the outer left, where a spiral iron stair leads to the first-floor window. The attic has two single dormers located in the centre and to the left. The single-storey wing attached to the outer left has a two-leaf glazed door to the left, a quadripartite modern window to the right, and a blank section to the outer left where a single window has been infilled.

The southwest elevation was not visible in 1999. The main house features plate glass timber sash and case windows, a slate piend roof, corniced wallhead stacks, and circular cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The property is enclosed by low capped gatepiers at the entrances to the right and left, along with a coped rubble boundary wall that surrounds the site.
