Description
35 Racecourse Road is a classical house built around 1820, featuring two storeys and three bays, with flanking wings. The structure is made of coursed sandstone and includes a vermiculated base course, a band course above, a central dividing band course, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, a cornice, a blocking course, and strip pilasters.
On the northwest entrance elevation, there are balustraded steps leading to a pedimented porch supported by Greek Doric columns. The entrance features a two-leaf timber door with a letterbox fanlight above. A single window is aligned above the door on the first floor, and there is regular fenestration on both floors in the flanking bays, which have apron panels beneath the ground floor windows. The single-storey linking bays to the outer right and left have bipartite windows, and there are blind arched niches in the pedimented wings, which are advanced and topped with ball finials.
The southwest elevation has a bay on the right side of the ground floor that is obscured by a single-storey wing, while the flanking bay to the left has a window, and there is regular fenestration on the first floor. The southeast elevation was not visible in 1999. The northeast elevation also has a bay on the left side of the ground floor obscured by the single-storey wing, with a window in the flanking bay to the right and regular fenestration on the first floor.
The house predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows, a slate piend roof, corniced wallhead stacks, and polygonal cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods are also notable.
The interior was not seen in 1999. Additionally, there are square-plan gatepiers at the entrance to the left, and a coped rubble boundary wall encloses the site.
