36 Racecourse Road, Ayr

This building, located at 36 Racecourse Road in Ayr, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay Italianate villa featuring flanking screen walls. The entrance elevation is painted, while the sides are finished with harl. It has a base course and broad timber eaves.

On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a central decorative cast-iron porch that rises to a first-floor balcony. The entrance includes a glazed timber door topped by a letterbox fanlight with two circular motifs. Above this, there is a single window aligned with the door on the first floor. The gabled bays on either side project forward; the bay to the right has a single ground-floor window with a pentice bracketed hood above, and another window at the first floor. The bay to the left features a canted bay with a stone roof and a single window aligned above on the first floor. There is a keystoned segmental arch leading to the screen wall on the outer left and a square-headed and arched entrance to the screen wall on the outer right.

The northeast and southwest elevations display irregular fenestration. The northwest elevation was not visible in 1999.

The villa has plate glass, four-pane, and lying-pane timber sash and case windows. It is topped with a slate roof that has paired polygonal corniced stacks with circular cans. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999. Additionally, there are square-plan gatepiers at the outer left for vehicles and at the right for pedestrians, along with a low boundary wall that encloses the site.
