Description

Westfield House is a Scottish Baronial style house built in 1879 by John Murdoch, prominently situated on a corner site. The main house is two storeys and an attic, arranged asymmetrically over seven bays. To the left is a lower, single-storey and attic wing. The exterior is constructed of coursed, snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and crowstepped gables.

The south-east elevation, which serves as the main entrance front, has an architraved doorpiece with an open pediment in the penultimate bay to the right; above the door is a three-light leaded fanlight with a swagged frieze. Bipartite windows are aligned above at the first floor, and a single window in the attic breaks the eaves to form a pediment. The fenestration is largely regular at all floors, with a corbelled angle turret to the outer right containing a small window. To the left of the entrance, arrowslit windows are located at ground floor level, while a mullioned and transomed window with a blind panel above the central light is situated at the first floor. A circular-plan stair tower adjoins the building, with stepped windows to the first two stages and three openings at attic level. Further to the left is an advanced, crowstepped gabled bay containing a three-light window at ground level, two single windows at first floor, and a single, pilastered segmental-pedimented window at attic level. Additional windows are found in the catslide section and the bay to the left, along with a single-storey and attic section to the outer left featuring a timber door and a small opening at ground level, and a modern forestair leading to a glazed timber door in the attic. A re-entrant angle has four single windows at ground level, and a five-light dormer at attic level.

The north-east elevation has two single windows at ground level and a blind window with a segmental-pedimented head in the attic, together with a pepperpot turret to the outer left and a timber door at centre. The north-west elevation presents an asymmetrical façade with four bays; regular fenestration is visible to the ground and first floors, with gabled dormers flanking a wallhead stack in the attic. A gabled bay to the left has bipartite windows to the ground and first floors, and a single window with a round-arched decorative pediment. A gabled bay to the right has a ground floor obscured by a flat-roofed harled addition, and a four-light canted window to the first floor together with a tripartite window incorporating a decorative pediment in the gablehead. Adjoining bays to the right were not visible in 1999.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass. The building has coped wallhead and gablehead stacks with circular cans, a slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 1999.

Gatepiers of square plan with panelled stone, along with two-leaf iron gates, mark the main entrance. Similar gatepiers support a two-leaf timber gate in front of the single-storey wing. A coped rubble boundary wall surrounds the site.
