Description
Wellesbourne is a large villa built in 1905 by James A Morris, demonstrating the Free Style architectural movement. It is two storeys with an attic and basement, arranged in an asymmetrical plan across three bays. The building is constructed of squared red sandstone, with a base course and timber eaves.
The south-east elevation, which is the main entrance front, features square gate piers that flank balustraded steps leading to a columned and corniced doorpiece. A two-leaf timber door is set within, accompanied by a bipartite window to the left. The first floor has a quadripartite window above a bipartite window, and the attic has a quadripartite window topped with a roundel. Two small bipartite windows are present at the wallhead, alongside a chimney. A timber door and a leaded bipartite window are to the ground floor, while a pair of small arrowslit windows light the first floor return. A lower two-storey and attic wing extends from the south-east. A transomed and mullioned leaded window is found on the ground floor, while the first floor has a leaded, mullioned window. Again, the attic features a quadripartite window and roundel. Steps lead to a glazed timber door, with a quadripartite, transomed and mullioned window above; the attic here is similarly punctuated by a quadripartite window and roundel.
The north-east elevation is three bays wide. The central bay contains a glazed timber door above a leaded quadripartite window. A tripartite window sits above the ground floor window, with a segmental-headed dormer window lighting the attic. A transomed and mullioned leaded window is set within a canted bay at ground floor to the left, with a single window above. The attic here has a segmental-headed dormer with a balcony. A rectangular plaque with a segmental head sits above, and a stepped string course connects to the canted rear elevation. Another segmental-headed dormer is present in the attic.
The north-west elevation, which forms the rear, is also three bays wide. The central recessed bay has a leaded, transomed and mullioned window at ground floor. A glazed timber door and sidelights, with a balcony, are set within a keystoned arch on the first floor. A flat-roofed dormer with a glazed timber door and balcony is positioned in the attic. Tripartite windows are present at ground and first floor levels on the flanking canted bays, with bipartite windows on the canted sides. Small, flat-roofed, bipartite dormers are found in the attic, and finials adorn the roof apex.
The south-west elevation is harled, gabled, and features windows to the ground and attic floors set off-centre to the right.
The villa predominantly features small-paned timber casement windows. The roof is slate covered, with a central pair of corniced ridge stacks and a buttressed wallhead stack to the south-east elevation. Circular cans are visible. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted.
The interior was not inspected in 1999.
Square, corniced gate piers mark the main entrance elevation and garden wall. The site is enclosed by a coped red sandstone boundary wall.
