Description
4 Racecourse View is a mid-19th century, two-storey and basement, detached Italianate villa located on a corner site. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone and features a deep rusticated base course, a band course above, a cill course at the first floor, and mutuled timber eaves.
The entrance elevation facing Midton Road has balustraded steps leading to a central loggia entrance porch. To the left of the porch is a single shouldered window, with an entrance to a re-entrant angle also to the left. There are two single windows in recessed bays, and above, three single windows are aligned at the first floor, separated by strip pilasters. The building has advanced flanking bays with openings at the basement, single windows at the ground floor, and tripartite arched windows at the first floor, featuring a consoled, pierced balcony to the left bay. There is a lower height recessed wing to the outer right.
The side elevation facing Racecourse View features an advanced, four-stage tower with a rusticated first stage. There is a single window at the second and third stages, with a consoled, pierced balcony at the third stage window. The fourth stage has a blind tripartite window. Flanking canted bays are present at the ground floor, with raised shaped panels over the window heads, a mutuled cornice, and single windows at the first floor.
The west side elevation is a four-bay design with a lower height wing to the outer left. It includes a two-leaf glazed timber door with a letterbox fanlight at the basement to the left bay, and single windows aligned above at the ground and first floor. There are two windows at the first floor in a recessed two-bay section, a single window at the ground floor to the left, and another single window at the re-entrant angle to the left. A glazed timber door is located at the re-entrant angle to the right, with additional openings at the basement and ground floor to the right bay. The elevation also features single windows at the basement and ground floor to the right bay, and an oriel window at the first floor with a bracketed base and consoled cornice.
The north elevation was not visible in 1999. The villa predominantly features lying-pane timber sash and case windows, a low-pitched slate piend roof, corniced wallhead stacks, and polygonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior was not seen in 1999. The property includes square-plan gatepiers on the Racecourse View and Midton Road elevations, along with a coped boundary wall that encloses the site.
