Description

Brookvale is a mid-19th century Italianate villa, originally consisting of four bays. The building is rectangular in plan and two stories high. The main facade is constructed of ashlar stone, with harling on the gables and rear, and ashlar margins and dressings on the front elevation. The rear elevations are of sandstone. The villa originally featured round-headed windows, some with moulded arches and impost blocks. A base course and projecting, bracketed eaves are also visible.

The southwest (main) elevation displays an asymmetrical facade. A broad gable projects from the penultimate bay to the left, featuring a large bowed window supported by square columnar mullions and bold paired ashlar brackets that formerly supported a cast-iron balcony. A stepped tripartite window is located on the first floor above. A porch is situated in the re-entrant angle, with a pilastered and corniced surround framing a roll-moulded, segmental-headed entrance. The entrance is fitted with a flush-panelled door and a window to the right return. An inner door is largely glazed, with a plate glass fanlight above. A round-headed window sits above the porch, with a segmental-headed canopy that breaks the eaves. To the right of the porch is a tripartite window at ground level, paired with a bipartite window at the first floor, with a gable breaking the eaves above. A narrow bay extends to the outer left, with a triple-arched window at ground level and a bipartite window at first floor, again topped by a gable. A cement-rendered rubble garden wall with a pebble coping runs along the left side of the property.

The southeast elevation is harled and lined, with a bipartite window at ground level to the left and a single window to the outer left. A first-floor window is situated off-centre to the right.

The northeast (rear) elevation is also asymmetrical, with an advanced, jerkin-headed bay in the penultimate section to the left. A lean-to conservatory is attached at the principal floor, built onto the ground floor scullery block; access to the conservatory is from within the house, and a former stair window is visible. A broad gable is recessed to the right, partially masked by the jerkin-head bay. Windows are symmetrically disposed at both ground and first floor levels, with an eight-pane sash and case window at the first floor. A narrow bay sits to the outer right, featuring a door off-centre at ground level and a gabled dormerhead at the first floor. A lower bay extends to the left, with a casement window off-centre to the right.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings, and features coped sandstone ridge stacks with circular cans. The interior of the villa was not inspected in 1993.

A stable block, positioned to the north of the main house, is a two-story, four-bay structure, now altered for domestic use. It includes projecting eaves, exposed rafters, a slightly advanced, taller piend-roofed block in the centre, a single-story, cement-rendered, flat-roofed block in the re-entrant angle to the outer left (with various blocked openings), and a lower, broad gable clasping the outer right, featuring a narrow window at ground level and a round-headed window in the gable. A broad square opening is present to the outer right.

A whinstone boundary wall with harl-pointing and large quartz stone coping extends around the property. Square gatepiers feature recessed panels, a bracketted cornice, and a shallow acroterian cap. The caps are currently loose and misaligned with the gatepiers.
