Description
Woodside is a mid-19th century villa, significantly remodelled in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a two-storey and attic, asymmetrical, rectangular building with a tower that has been subdivided. The exterior is constructed of whinstone rubble with harl pointing, with sandstone ashlar margins and dressings; a base course is also present.
The southwest (entrance) elevation has five asymmetrical bays. A broad, advanced bay is positioned on the outer left, featuring a full-height canted ashlar window extending from the ground floor to the first floor. It has lead coping and an ashlar balustraded parapet, chamfered to the gabled attic storey, with a window at centre and a broken segmental pediment with a keystone and obelisk. A wallhead stack is present on the returns, corbelled and with bargeboarding. A canted dormer is located to the right of the stack on the right return. Two symmetrical bays are to the right, with tall windows at ground level and dormerheaded windows at the first floor. A blank plaque is found in the gablehead, and a square dormer is offset to the left, featuring a tripartite window. A square tower rises behind the penultimate bay to the left, topped with a swept pyramidal roof and a tripartite window at the upper stage. A segmental pediment breaks over the window in the centre of this stage, and a stack rises through the corner. A narrow entrance bay is at the penultimate right, with an advanced gabled door surround clasping the outer right bay, featuring ashlar coping to the skews and skewblocks. The entrance itself is round-headed, with a panelled door and a small window with border glazing above. A gabled bay is advanced to the outer right, with a full-height canted window and an ashlar parapet.
The southeast elevation is symmetrical with three bays, incorporating a fourth full-height canted bay window to the outer right and a piend-roofed conservatory at ground level. A window is at ground level, a door is at the penultimate right position, and a gabled dormerhead window flanks a shouldered, advanced flue and stack at the centre. A stack breaks through a triangular pediment. The full-height canted bay to the outer right has a timber cornice and a piended roof.
The half-piend-roofed conservatory has boarded bases and pilaster divisions, and a door is located to the outer right on the southeast elevation.
The windows are primarily timber sash and case windows with plate glass or 8-pane over plate glass, with a 4-pane sash and case window on the side elevation. Cast-iron bracketed guttering is on the rear elevation. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings. Tall wallhead stacks have ashlar quoin strips and coping, and ashlar coping is present to the skews and skewblocks.
The interior was not inspected in 1993.
