Description

Strathlee is a large, two-storey, three-bay gabled villa likely designed by Alexander Thomson and built after 1865. Constructed as a rectangular plan villa, it displays Tudoresque detailing. The villa is built from honey-coloured sandstone ashlar, with polished sandstone dressings and details, chamfered reveals, hoodmoulds, and a base course. The deep projecting eaves feature exposed rafters.

The west (main) elevation is divided into three bays, with a further single-storey bay to the far left. A tall, broad gable is slightly advanced to the left, featuring a canted window at ground level and a nailhead studded cornice. A tripartite Tudor window sits above at the first floor, accompanied by a hoodmould. A blank escutcheon is located in the gablehead. To the right of the gable is an arched doorway with a two-leaf panelled and half-glazed vestibule door, with painted glass. A tripartite window is situated at ground level to the outer right, while a bipartite Tudor-arched dormerhead window breaks the eaves. A single-storey, harled block sits to the far outer left, featuring a bipartite window.

The south elevation has a gable with symmetrically arranged windows at ground floor level; a window is positioned off-centre to the right at the first floor.

The east (rear) elevation features a tall gable to the outer right, with a tall window at ground level and a smaller window at first floor level. A bipartite, pointed stair window with a gable breaking the eaves is located to the left, accompanied by small windows below; the wall extends blank to the outer left. A single-storey service block is attached to the outer right.

Plate glass sash and case windows are present on the main elevation; the rear elevation features eight-pane and ten-pane sash and case windows, including a lying-pane stair window. The roof is grey slate, rendered with coped ridge stacks topped with round cans. The interior was not inspected in 1993.

Attached to the villa is a long, single-storey, rectangular-plan stable and outbuilding. These are built with painted harl exterior, yellow brick sandstone margins and dressings. A boarded door is located centrally, with a broad hoist door above, beside a window and a large opening to the outer right. The left side has a window-door-window-door arrangement.

Eight-pane timber sash and case windows are fitted. The roof is grey slate with flightholes breaking the eaves to the outer left, and a skylight to the right; a brick ridge stack with octagonal cans is present.

The boundary walls are constructed from whinstone rubble with harl pointing, topped with large quartz boulder coping. Ashlar pier caps with chamfered arrises and stepped pyramidal caps complete the boundary features.
