Description
This is a mid-19th century, two-storey, four-bay villa, likely designed by Alexander Thomson. It is situated on Rosneath Road, Cove, near Grafton. The villa exhibits Italianate detailing and is constructed of whinstone rubble with harl pointing, complemented by polished honey-coloured sandstone margins and dressings. A base course and quoins are present, and the window reveals are chamfered.
The west elevation is the main facade, composed of a three-bay main block with the fourth bay recessed on the outer left. A depressed gabled block is located in the penultimate bay to the left, featuring an ashlar bow at ground level with a half-domed lead roof supported by timber brackets. The first floor of this section has a bipartite, round-headed window, and a central colonnette with carved acanthus leaf ornamentation and channelled voussoirs. A lean-to porch bay is situated in the re-entrant angle to the right, accessed via ashlar steps leading to a round-arched door, a die with acanthus leaf detail and a two-leaf panelled door surmounted by a plate glass fanlight; a small window is positioned above. A tripartite window is found at ground level on the outer right, while a bipartite window is directly under the eaves on the first floor, incorporating a bargeboarded gable supported by paired timber brackets that break the eaves, and a bracketted cill. A curved conservatory is attached to the right return, partially concealing a ground floor door and window, with two symmetrically-disposed round-headed windows on the first floor. A lower two-storeyed bay occupies the outer left, featuring a bipartite window at ground level and a single window at first floor.
The east, or rear, elevation is finished with painted harl and incorporates four asymmetrical bays. An advanced, broad, asymmetrical gable is positioned to the left, with a piend-roofed single-storey jamb at ground level. A large stair window is present on the outer left, while narrow windows are situated at ground, with the first floor windows symmetrically disposed to the right. A two-bay, piend-roofed block is slightly recessed to the outer right, with two windows at first floor. A boarded door with a letterbox fanlight is located at ground level to the left.
A large bowed conservatory extends against the right gable, with an ashlar base course, large plate glass windows, a lantern platform roof and two round-headed windows on the first floor.
The main elevation features plate glass timber sash and case windows, along with four-pane and four-pane over six-pane sash and case windows. A broad six-pane sash and case window and a picture window are found on the rear elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate, incorporating lead flashings and sandstone coped ridge stacks with round cans. Rosette decoration adorns the rafter ends of the gables, and console skewputts are also present.
The interior of the villa was not inspected in 1993.
A coach house is situated at the rear right, with painted harl and a lean-to corrugated-iron roof. It features two boarded coach doors, one of which is a centrally placed half-glazed door and incorporates a letterbox fanlight.
A sundial, dated 1725, is located on the grounds – this is a low baluster sundial with copper gnomons, and is not original to the house.
Decorative cast-iron gates are complemented by painted square piers with cornices featuring rosette decoration and rounded caps. A harled rubble boundary wall is topped with quartz boulder coping.
