Description
Burn Cliff Cottage is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan cottage ornée villa. It is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble, featuring red sandstone coursed bands, polished sandstone margins, and dressings. The building has a base course, quoins, chamfered reveals, and Tudor-arched doors and windows on the first floor, along with projecting eaves and exposed rafters.
On the west elevation, there are three bays with gables that break the eaves. The broad gable to the outer left has a canted window at the ground level, a pierced ashlar trefoil balustrade, and a window above in the gablehead. To the right, there is a slightly advanced doorpiece with a battered band under the eaves, a side buttress, and steps made of whinstone and sandstone dies topped with ball finials. The inner door is shoulder arched with an incised trefoil on the lintel, leading to a two-leaf panelled door and a half-glazed inner door. A tripartite window is located at the ground outer right, complete with a hoodmould and labelstops, while a window at the first floor sits in a narrow gable that breaks the eaves. Above the door, there is a diminutive triangular dormer.
The south elevation features a broad gable with a decorative bargeboard, interrupted by a broad, shouldered apex stack. There is a lean-to single-storey kitchen block to the outer right, with a window at the ground outer right that is buttressed to the side, and two arched windows at the first floor.
On the east elevation, there are three asymmetrical bays and an asymmetrical M-gable to the outer right, with a cat-slide roof over a single-storey advanced block to the outer left.
The north elevation has two windows to the outer right and left, with a window at the centre in the gablehead. The cottage features four-pane sash and case windows, a purple slate roof with lead flashings, and shouldered apex stacks topped with decorative squat octagonal cans.
Additionally, there is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan bothy located at the north corner of the garden. This bothy has advanced eaves and exposed rafters, with a door at the centre flanked by windows that have raised cills. It features three-pane over six-pane sash and case windows and corniced apex stacks.
