Description
This is a mid-19th century, two-storey villa situated on a prominent site at Glen Dhault, Shore Road, Kilcreggan. It is constructed with rubble walls, some harl-pointed, and a rear elevation rendered in cement. The building features margins and dressings in bull-faced sandstone, with painted margins around the windows, and rusticated quoins. A base course, moulded string course, and advanced eaves contribute to its appearance.
The south-east (entrance) elevation has a narrow, M-shaped gable with a central door set within a shallow castellated surround, featuring a four-panelled door. Flanking the door are windows, symmetrically arranged on either side at the first floor, with Jacobethan detailing above the windows. A lower, recessed rendered gable extends to the outer right, containing a ground-floor window and a first-floor window. A five-bay right return features a window and door at ground level. A piend-roofed block breaks the eaves centrally, with four narrow windows above.
The north-west elevation displays an advanced, asymmetrical M-gable and a lean-to rendered service block to the outer left. A broad bow with a battlemented blocking course is at ground level to the outer right, accompanied by a French door with a stepped hoodmould at the first floor, and a window at the ground floor of the right return. A narrow gable to the left features windows on both the ground and first floors, while a lower, rendered gable of the service block resides to the outer left.
The south-west (main) elevation is three bays wide. An advanced bay at the centre contains a full-height canted bay, chamfered to the gable, with rusticated margins at ground level and polished stone with Jacobethan strapwork detail at the first floor. Recessed bays flank the centre, with a window at ground level on the right, and a gabled dormerhead at the first floor. The bay to the left is recessed and has a window on the ground floor, but a blank upper floor.
The windows are timber sash and case windows with four panes of plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slate, featuring alternating patterned panels of diaper and fish scale designs, with lead flashings. Sandstone coped ridge stacks are topped with octagonal cans. The interior was not inspected in 1993.
Outbuildings include heavily rusticated gatepiers with ball finials, leading to a service area. A stepped, cement-rendered curtain wall extends to the left of the gatepiers, featuring blind arrowslit details. One outbuilding has a gable with a round, leaded window at the gablehead, with quoin strips and ashlar coping to the skewbacks. A grey slate roof, apex stacks, various openings, and a remnant of a former greenhouse, now a gambrel-roofed wooden structure on a brick and ashlar base, are also present.
A boundary wall constructed from slender cast iron gatepiers, a whinstone boulder wall with rubble snecking and harl pointing, convexly curves toward the gate. Quartz stone quoins and quartz boulder coping complete the wall.
