Description

Midton Cottage, located at 58 Midton Road in Ayr, is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay villa with an asymmetrical plan and gabled roof. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a base course, painted strip quoins, and blocked surrounds to the window openings. The timber bargeboards have a curvilinear design, and the first-floor windows in the outer bays extend above the eaves to create gableheads.

On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a central advanced gabled bay with a square-headed entrance and a timber boarded door. Above this entrance, there is a bipartite window on the first floor. To the left, at the ground floor, there is a single window in the re-entrant angle, and to the left of that, there are single windows at the ground floor in a recessed bay. On the right side, there is an advanced bipartite window at the ground floor in a recessed bay, with a single window aligned above it on the first floor.

The southwest and southeast elevations were not visible in 1999. The northeast elevation features a gabled design with a flue that advances through both the ground and first floors, breaking the eaves. There is also a harled addition to the left.

The cottage has 8- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with a wallhead stack on the side and a coped stack at the rear, as well as circular and polygonal chimney cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods are also notable.

The interior was not seen in 1999.

Additionally, there are square-plan gatepiers to the left that provide both pedestrian and vehicular access, and a coped rubble wall encloses the site.
