Description
Rosehill, located at 28 London Road in Kilmarnock, is a classical villa built around 1840, with later additions. This two-storey, three-bay building has a rectangular plan and features screen walls along with a later rear gabled wing. It is constructed from coursed sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, and includes a base course and cornice, as well as moulded architraves.
On the southwest (principal) elevation, there is an ashlar doorstep leading to a timber panelled door set within a central pilastered doorcase. The outer bays have architraved windows with corniced lintels. The first floor has three regularly placed bays. To the right, a screen wall contains a later garage entrance, while to the left, a matching screen wall has a door leading to the garden.
The northwest elevation features a screen wall that conceals the ground floor, with a blind first floor and a central wallhead stack. The northeast (rear) elevation is partially obscured, with a wing attached to the right. The southeast elevation has its ground floor obscured by the later garage and a blind first floor, with a lowered central wallhead stack.
The villa has two-pane timber sash and case windows, a piended grey slate roof with metal ridging and flashings, and coped skews on the rear wing. The rainwater goods have been replaced, with gutters concealed by the eaves cornice and downpipes located at the angles of the side elevations. There are central, corniced wallhead stacks on the side elevations, with five tall cans on the west side and considerably lowered cans on the east side, which are now missing.
The interior was not seen in 2001 but is in residential use.
The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a two-course ashlar retaining wall with segmental copes facing the road. There are two pairs of panelled and corniced ashlar gatepiers with moulded cushion caps, which were formerly fitted with cast-iron railings and gates. An ornate boundary wall angle pillar is shared with No. 30 London Road, and there are ashlar-coped rubble garden walls at the sides.
