Description

40 London Road in Kilmarnock is a classical villa built around 1835. It is a two-storey building with a basement and has a rectangular plan. The exterior is made of finely stugged sandstone ashlar with polished dressings and quoins, while the sides are constructed of coursed rubble. The villa features a deep base course, a cornice, and a low plain parapet. The principal elevations have architraved window surrounds with projecting sills.

On the southwest elevation, there are low ashlar walls with flat copes that end in squared piers with moulded cushioned caps, flanking a wide staircase that leads to the central entrance. The portico has a pair of Doric columns with matching engaged pilasters at the rear, supporting an entablature with prominent angle quoins. The entrance features a two-leaf, panelled timber door within an architraved surround. There is a window flanking the outer bay, with partially concealed matching windows in the basement, and three regularly placed bays on the first floor. The eaves cornice and low parapet sit above.

The northwest elevation has a central door with a plain margined surround on the ground floor, with a blocked window to the left bay; the first floor is a blind elevation. The northeast (rear) elevation has its ground floor partially concealed by a boundary wall and is regularly fenestrated on the first floor. The southeast elevation also has its ground floor partially concealed by a boundary wall, with a blind elevation on the first floor and a central wallhead stack.

The ground floor of the southwest elevation features replacement two-pane timber sash and case windows, while the first floor has late 20th-century metal framed, two-pane double glazed units. The roof is piended with grey slate, aluminium ridging, and flashing. The painted cast-iron rainwater goods have gutters concealed by moulded cornices, with downpipes on the side elevations. There were formerly a pair of coursed ashlar, central wallhead stacks on the side elevations, which were tall with corniced copes and tall shaped cans on top, some of which are now missing, and the northwest stack has been removed.

The interior was not seen in 2001 and is currently in use as private residential flats.
