Description

This is a classical villa, likely dating to around 1880, situated on London Road, Kilmarnock, along with a boundary wall and gatepiers. The villa is a 2-storey, 3-bay shallow L-shaped design with a single-storey lean-to addition to the right and a 2-storey, single bay wing to the left. Most elevations are harled and painted, with ashlar detailing, though the north-west elevation is of coursed rubble. A base and eaves course is present, as are projecting drip sills. The gables are skew, featuring heavy, squared putts.

The main, or north-east, elevation features a central, enclosed entrance porch with a 4-panelled door, a pointed arch fanlight, and an architraved rectangular surround complete with ornate spandrels. A plain surround with chamfered outer arrises, a cornice, and a triangular pediment displaying “75” in a shield is also present. To the returns are narrow, round-arched windows with recessed rectangular windows and drip sills. A plain bipartite window sits in the central bay of the first floor. A single window with a hood mould is located on the ground floor of the right bay, with a plain window above. The advanced bay on the left has a single window with an architraved surround and hood mould on both storeys. A lower, 2-storey, single bay wing abuts to the left, featuring a central window on both storeys and a stepped parapet gable. A single-storey, segmental arched vehicle entrance to the left is now in-filled. A later garage door and a small square window are incorporated into the extreme left section of the wall. To the right of the main house is a single-storey lean-to with a central door.

The south-east elevation shows a single-storey extension, mirroring the north-east elevation’s details. The gablehead of the main house is visible behind. The rear, or south-west, elevation was not observed in 2001. The north-west elevation adjoins Torwood (No. 73) with a lean-to, and features a blind elevation leading to a blind gable with a stack.

Replacement 2-pane PVCu glazing has been installed in the main house, with vertically placed 4-pane panels on the porch sides. The 2-storey wing to the left has 4-pane timber sash and case style windows. A later glazed door with a fixed 9-pane window replaces the former cart arch to the left extension; a smaller 9-pane window is situated to the far left. The main house has a piended grey slate roof, while a later flat roof serves the unobtrusive extension. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with gutters concealed behind the eaves cornice. Stepped stacks to the gableheads are painted and feature four hexagonal terracotta cans, with one missing from the north-west stack. The interior was not inspected in 2001, but the low single-storey wing contains doctors' reception, waiting, and consulting rooms.

The boundary wall is a painted, low, coursed ashlar construction with rectangular copes featuring chamfered arrises. Painted, tall, panelled ashlar gate piers with flattened square caps are placed at the outer angles of the boundary, aligning with the walls of Nos. 73 and 77.
