Description

This is a two-storey villa, built around 1845, with later additions. It originally presented a three-bay plain classical facade, but has been extended with a two-storey, single-bay addition to the left and a single-storey, canted-bay wing to the right. The main part of the building is faced with painted ashlar, while the single-storey wing has a brick side and an upper wall of ashlar related to the later addition. Giant angle pilasters support a frieze and blocking course across the original three bays.

The south (principal) elevation features a central pair of timber panelled doors, now within a later projecting porch with curved, banded angles and an architrave topped with a triangular pediment set against a parapet. Flanking the central bay are single, architraved and entablatured bays. Three regularly spaced, architraved windows are on the first floor. To the left, a slightly recessed two-storey, single-bay addition has a plain window on the ground floor and an architraved window surround above. To the right, a single-storey wing features a central, canted bay window with painted stone transoms and mullions, a bipartite window in the centre, and single windows on the sides—all featuring smaller upper lights and a continuous lintel course, topped by a corniced parapet that conceals the roofline. A painted ashlar wall to the far left contains a plain door surround with a timber gate.

The west elevation is partially visible and shows an ashlar ground floor with a central bay; the first floor is of painted brick, containing a window to the right and a bipartite window to the left. The north (rear) elevation was not visible in 2001, as it is concealed by other buildings. The east elevation displays a blind brick wall of the wing at ground floor level, adjoining a boundary wall with the neighbouring property at number 12 London Road. The roof of the wing partially obscures a blind first floor. A central wallhead stack rises from the eaves cornice.

Replacement timber 12-pane sash and case windows are present on the principal elevation of the main house. The west elevation has 2 and 8-pane timber sash and case windows. The single-storey wing has timber, fixed single-pane windows with separate coloured glass upper lights. The roof is piended and covered in grey slate, with metal ridging and flashings. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present; the gutters are concealed within the cornice, and downpipes run along the side elevations. There were formerly two painted brick wallhead stacks with ashlar neck cornices. The stack on the left is now incorporated within the two-storey, single-bay addition and resembles a roofline stack. Three taller ventilation cans are on the east stack, while the west stack has four hexagonal cans terminating in ventilation flues. A smaller, later stack and cans are located at the rear of the west addition.

The interior of the single-storey wing features a semi-barrel vaulted roof with a glazed panel leading to a platformed roof. There is plaster cornicing and an ogee arch leading to the bay window, supported by columns. Timber panelling surrounds the bay window and the upper lights are coloured glass, representing abstract foliage in green, brown, orange, and fawn tones. An ornate, carved timber fire surround contains a replacement fire. The rest of the interior was not seen in 2001.
