Description

The Kilmarnock War Memorial, designed by James Miller in 1927 and sculpted by David McGill, is a three-bay, rectangular-plan structure in a stripped classical style. It is constructed from polished yellow sandstone ashlar and features a base course, a banded rusticated architrave, a frieze, an entablature, and a cornice with a dentilled soffit that runs across three elevations, supporting a large, blind parapet.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, the slightly projecting facade includes a recessed central entrance with steps and a ramp, featuring a glazed two-leaf door with a fanlight. Fluted Ionic columns in antis frame the entrance, with flanking bays that have Doric pilasters and a single rectangular window in each bay. The southwest elevation has a single rectangular window in the center, while the northwest (rear) elevation is blind. The northeast elevation also features a single rectangular window in the center. Geometric patterned metal guards are present on the windows and door.

Inside, there is a marble cross at the center of a stone-laid floor, and a bronze statue of 'Victor' is located at the center of the rear wall. Above the statue is an inscribed plaque that reads, 'In everlasting memory of the men and women of Kilmarnock who gave their lives in the service of their country,' with memorial name boards flanking it to the left and right.
