Description

This building comprises a two-storey, eleven-bay early 20th century Baroque school, with a raised basement, and an eleven-bay extension added in 1912 by the Ayrshire Education Authority. The main block was designed by Gabriel Andrew and William Newlands between 1907 and 1909, following an E-plan. The principal elevation faces southeast and features a pedimented centre projection. The ground floor is characterized by banded rustication, a band course, panelled pilasters with decorative cartouches, elevation divisions marked by pilaster strips with ancones, and a balustraded parapet. All windows have raised cills, and the first-floor windows have raised lintels. The building is constructed from red Ballochmyle sandstone ashlar.

The central bay of the principal range projects and contains a recessed entrance with a flight of steps and a segmental fanlight above. An elaborate, moulded shell-hood, supported on massive, decorated scrolls, overhangs the entrance, with central hanging ornament holding a light fitting; cartouches flank this feature. Paired attached Ionic columns, decorated with symbols of science and art, frame nine-light mullion and transom windows at the first floor, surmounted by a broken pediment and a semi-circular tympanum depicting allegorical figures. Three-bay pavilions project on either side of the centre; the basement exhibits regular fenestration with keystones, while the first floor has architraved and aproned windows with console bracket keystones. The central first-floor window is topped with an open segmental pediment. Further regular fenestration is present above, again with architraved and aproned windows and consoled bracket keystones. Recessed sections flank the centre, featuring bipartite, keystoned basement windows and 4-light mullioned and transom windows at the first and second floors, the latter with shouldered architraves and cill brackets. The right return features three bays with regular fenestration and a wing attached to the right.

The 1912 wing comprises two storeys and eleven bays, divided into a recessed three-bay range and an eight-bay projection, both with regular fenestration. The southwest elevation, twelve bays wide, includes a basement door in the second bay from the left, bipartite windows with keystones in bays five to twelve, and three-bay pavilions mirroring the design of the main elevation’s end pavilions. The central six-bay range contains 4-light mullioned and transom windows at the first floor with raised cills and cill brackets, and similar windows at the second floor with shouldered architraves, raised cills, and cill brackets. The rear, northwest elevation features later redbrick additions and blocked windows. The roof is grey slate, in a U-plan, piended design. The interior was empty and boarded up in 2001. Wrought-iron railings with pointed heads and dog bars, along with matching gates, front the property. Ballochmyle ashlar gatepiers feature pedimented capitals.
