Description

St Columba's Roman Catholic Primary School, designed by Alan Crombie in 1902, is a two-storey, five-bay, square-plan school building with early 20th-century Baroque detailing. The front portion is built in red Ballochmyle ashlar sandstone, while the rear ranges are harled with red stone quoins and margins.

The north elevation facing Elmbank Drive features a symmetrical composition with near-symmetrical projecting pedimented end bays. The central three bays contain three arched windows at ground level, each with round-arched architraves composed of Ionic pilasters, arches springing from capitals and featuring keystones, with raised cills and aprons below the glazing. Above these are three tripartite windows at first floor level. All first floor windows have attached Ionic columns substituting for plain stone mullions. The projecting end bays are particularly decorative: the right end features a banded rusticated round arch with an emphatic keystone and pedimented hoodmould supported on brackets, currently glazed but formerly serving as an entrance door, with a bipartite window above flanked by Doric pilasters and Ionic attached columns, an entablature and segmental pediment. The left end mirrors this arrangement with a bipartite window at ground level with banded rusticated architrave, keystones and hoodmould, and a matching bipartite window above. A cross finial crowns the left gable pediment, though this has been lost from the right.

The five bays of the north elevation are divided by pilaster strips, banded at first floor level. The building features a base course (which reduces in depth due to the street gradient), a band course at first floor level, and a cornice at the central section.

The east elevation comprises a two-bay range with regular fenestration and a boy's entrance housed within a square-plan projecting porch with shaped parapet. Steps lead up to a four-pointed arched entrance door with banded rusticated architrave. A single window occupies the left return. The central three-bay range contains a large bipartite window at first floor level in the right bay with stone mullion and transom, two large single windows at ground level to the left, and two smaller single windows at first floor level above. Basement ventilators are present. The end bay features quoins at the arrises and tripartite windows with stone mullions at both ground and first floor levels.

The west elevation mirrors the east, with a two-bay range containing a girl's entrance within a similar square-plan projecting porch with shaped parapet and four-pointed arched door with banded rusticated architrave. A single window is on the left return. The three-bay central range contains a bipartite window at first floor level in the left bay with stone mullion and transom, and tripartite windows with stone mullions in the central and right bays at both ground and first floor levels.

The windows throughout employ a mix of six, eight, ten and fifteen-pane timber sash and case glazing and plate glazing. The building is roofed in slate with hipped roofs and straight skews to the main elevation gables.

The boundary treatment comprises a low squared and snecked rubble wall with coping and railings along the top of Elmbank Drive and Dick Street, with a taller wall running along the bottom of Elmbank Drive. Two pairs of entrance gates correspond to the boys' and girls' entrances, featuring banded rustication to the shafts with inverted cushion capitals. Cast-iron railings and gates are painted red, with every alternate railing bearing a cross finial and every eighth railing featuring arabesque detailing; the gates follow a similar pattern.
