Description
These are a pair of semi-detached villas, likely designed by William Railton around 1875. They are located on London Road, Kilmarnock, and comprise two bays, with a basement, and extend to two storeys. The houses are arranged in an L-shape, with a raised entrance porch positioned in the re-entrant angle.
The villas are constructed of coursed sandstone ashlar, with drip sills to the projecting bay windows, as well as base and eaves courses. Bracketed, overhanging, blocked eaves are present. The principal, southwest elevation features a flight of nine steps divided by a sloped party wall. The raised ground floor entrance porch has decorated columns that terminate in arched brackets, a classical detailed cornice, and a possibly glazed or timber-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above. There is a single window above the door to the first floor. A projecting two-storey bay is located to the left, with a further projection containing a central window to the basement. A pilaster mullioned, three-light, rectangular bay window extends across the ground and first floors of this projection, featuring single windows to each return. Classical mouldings and detailing separate the ground and first floors. Number 22 mirrors the design of Number 20, but is reversed.
The northwest elevation displays a basement not seen in 2001, a small square window with a projecting sill above the door, and a larger staircase window with a projecting sill to an upper storey. A wallhead chimney surmounts the elevation. The rear, northeast elevation was not observed in 2001. The southeast elevation, at ground floor, has a later panelled basement door slightly offset to the left, alongside a smaller door. There is a small square window above the door, and a larger staircase window with a projecting sill to an upper storey. A wallhead chimney is present.
Two-pane timber sash and case windows are found throughout, with replacements to the principal elevation of Number 20. Stained glass margin lights are present in the four-pane, horned timber sash and case staircase windows. The upper panel of the front doors features nine panes of glazing, with two timber panels below. A later replacement window is present in the basement of the former Number 22. The roofs are piended and covered in grey slate, with later metal ridging, flashing, and valleys. A similar treatment is present on the piended grey slate roofs covering the bay windows. Bracketed, timber blocked, over sailing eaves are also present. The rainwater goods are painted cast-iron, with bracketed gutters to the blocked eaves. The stacks are of coursed ashlar, with a moulded neck cope, the stack to Number 22 being large and ornate, while Number 20 has plain replacement cans. The interior was not observed in 2001.
