Description
Torwood is a Gothic Revival villa dating to around 1885, with a later 20th-century extension to the northwest. Originally a 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular design, it features a projecting bay window and is constructed of coursed ashlar, with rubble sides, all harled and painted. Ashlar dressings and cornices are painted, complemented by base and sill courses. The building has gabled windows topped with ball and spike finials, and plain skew gables with block skewputts.
The northeast elevation (the principal façade) is dominated by a central entrance, featuring a stepped surround and projecting pilasters. Scroll brackets support a square plinth with a "TORWOOD" plaque, topped by an advanced, stepped triangular canopy. The recessed entrance door has a shoulder-shaped rectangular fanlight above. A band course sits above, with a centrally hoodmoulded window to the first floor. A right-side bay is advanced and incorporates a 2-storey, 3-sided canted bay window with windows on each side of each storey. A cornice supports battlements, and the recessed gablehead has an arrowslit, squared finial, and further ornate cushioned finial with a spike. To the left, a slightly advanced bay also features a 3-sided canted bay window; the ground floor has a later piended roof and the first floor a corbelled window with a hoodmould, squared putts and a projecting spiked pole finial breaking the gablehead. A single-storey, single-bay wing is situated to the left, with a central window, scrolled brackets supporting a stepped triangular canopy, and a low corniced parapet concealing the roofline.
The southeast elevation has a single bay adjoining the ground floor, with a blind gable above. The southwest (rear) elevation was not visible in 2001.
The northwest elevation displays a later 20th-century, stepped extension which partially conceals the upper portions of the original elevation; a blind gable of the main house's upper storey remains visible.
The building has 2-pane sash and case windows, with horns to the upper sashes. Replacement windows are present in the ground floor left bay window and at the central window. A shallow piended grey slate roof covers the main house, with gablet windows. Metal ridging, valleys and flashing are in place, along with a rooflight to the right of the gabled bay window. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with gutters concealed within the eaves cornice. Tall stacks are located on the gableheads, featuring a high base block with painted ashlar coping, five squared stacks set at 90 degrees to the base, projecting corniced neck copes, and angled square cans.
The interior was not inspected in 2001.
