Description

Restalrig Manse is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical villa located at 4 Claremont Park, Edinburgh. It features a single-storey wing projecting to the west and a screen wall to the east. The front is constructed of stugged ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked rubble. The building has a base course, a moulded cill course for the first-floor windows, and an eaves cornice.

The north elevation, which is the principal facade, is symmetrical with an entrance door located in the central bay. This door is panelled and has a rectangular plate glass fanlight above, framed by a consoled corniced doorpiece. The ground floor openings on either side have projecting cills, and the fenestration is regular.

The south elevation has irregularly arranged bays. It features a central staircase window, a narrow rectangular opening to the outer left bay, a small bipartite window left of centre, and a door in the right bay at ground floor. The first floor has rectangular openings in the outer bays, with an ornamental cast iron window guard on the left bay. A modern box dormer is situated in the centre, and there is a lean-to garage building to the right of the main block. The four-bay wing to the left includes two windows and a door in the inner bays, with a projecting outer bay that has a door.

The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case. The main block has a grey slate piended roof, while the wing has a half-piended roof. There are four flue stugged ashlar wallhead stacks with cornices.

The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary wall consists of a coped ashlar dwarf wall along the street, which formerly had railings. The gatepiers and lamp brackets are square-section ashlar with shallow pyramidal caps and cast-iron lamp brackets.
