Description
4, 5, 6 Gladstone Place in Edinburgh is a tenement building dated 1880, constructed for John Blackie. The building consists of three symmetrical, four-storey, six-bay units. The front is made of polished ashlar sandstone, with a channelled ground floor and squared and snecked rubble at the rear. It features a base course, band courses between the floors, and moulded cill courses for the windows on the first, second, and third floors, along with an eaves cornice and blocking course. The windows on the first and second floors are architraved, with cornicing on the first floor.
On the north (principal) elevation, there are entrance doors at the ground floor located in the first and fifth bays, as well as between the third and fourth bays. These doors have rectangular plate glass fanlights and consoled cornice doorpieces. The building is regularly fenestrated with three-light, four-storey canted outer bays, which are corniced at the upper floors.
The south elevation has not been seen since 1995. The building features plate glass timber sash and case windows in all openings, a grey slate piended roof, and multi-flue ashlar coped stacks.
The boundary wall consists of an ashlar dwarf wall topped with modern railings.
