Description

Newington Lodge, located at 38 Mayfield Terrace in Edinburgh, is a single-storey, symmetrical villa built in 1828. It features a rectangular plan with three bays and includes a basement and single-storey wings to the basement. The exterior is constructed from cream-painted sandstone ashlar, with a base course, cill course, cornice, and a blocking course that is raised at the center. The windows are architraved.

On the north elevation, there are steps leading up to the entrance doorcase, which is supported by Greek Doric columns and pilasters. The entablature includes a moulded band, cornice, and blocking course, with a timber panelled door that has a glazed fanlight above it. A carved plaque is positioned on the blocking course, and there are single windows in the flanking bays, each with a blind balustrade below the cill course. The villa features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof, along with four octagonal corniced stacks topped with corniced cans. Decorative wrought-iron balusters and a handrail flank the steps to the entrance doorcase.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996.

The boundary walls consist of coped ashlar and include gatepiers that face the street. Recent wrought-iron railings have been added to the boundary walls, along with a decorative wrought-iron pedestrian gate. This gate is flanked by painted pilastered entrances that feature a cornice and a blocking course raised at the center.
