Description

Mayfield Terrace Lodge, located at 122 Dalkeith Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1825. This single-storey, three-bay, symmetrical, classical former gatelodge features a single-storey wing to the north, which has an additional later storey that is not included in the listing. The building is constructed of cream sandstone coursed rubble with droved dressings, and includes a base course, advanced cills, stone canopies over the windows and doorway, a cornice, and overhanging eaves.

On the entrance elevation, there is a doorway in the advanced central bay, featuring a panelled door and a leaded fanlight, with a pediment above that breaks the eaves. The outer bays to the left and right have bipartite windows. The former single-storey wing to the north has a blocked doorway on the left and a small window on the outer right. The original railings are still present along the street.

The south elevation, facing Mayfield Terrace, has a single bay with a full-height, three-light canted window. The west elevation, which faces No 31 Mayfield Terrace, features two single windows on the outer left and a decoratively carved parapet. The windows have diamond pattern leaded lights, although the top lights have been replaced. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with a polygonal roof over the canted bay.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The gatepiers, designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1825, are a pair of Tudor gothic corniced gatepiers with blind traceried panels, made of cream sandstone ashlar.
