Description
Heather Lodge, located at Whittingehame House, dates from around 1830 and has undergone later alterations. This single-storey gate lodge was originally designed in a T-plan, with significant additions made to the west.
The building is constructed from cream sandstone that is squared, snecked, and stugged, featuring a base course and chamfered reveals. The southeast elevation presents an irregular four-bay façade, with the right bay belonging to the original lodge. There is a doorway located to the left of the center and a canted bay to the right of the center. The outer bays are gabled, with a stone mullioned bipartite window in the left bay and a single window in the right bay, both topped with a corbelled stone slab canopy. A similar window is found in the gabled bay on the east elevation. The windows are plate glass sash and case, and the original work is covered with large grey slates that have leaded flashings and overhanging eaves. The eaves are supported by timber brackets, kingposts, and tapering finials, with moulded coping on the stacks.
The gatepiers, quadrants, and boundary walls consist of four red sandstone gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps, which are linked by low coped quadrants where the former railings have been removed. The boundary walls are made of rubble and adjoin the property.
