Description

This building, located at 7 Marchhall Crescent in Edinburgh, dates from around 1880 and is a two-storey, four-bay symmetrical double villa featuring unique architectural details. It has single-storey wings with attics that extend to the sides and rear of the house. The exterior is constructed from red sandstone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings on the main elevation, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked rubble. It includes a base course, advanced cills for the first-floor windows, and a deep cornice.

On the west (entrance) elevation, there are doorways in the two central bays, featuring panelled doors with round-arched, plate glass fanlights above. The doorways are adorned with pedimented bracketed hoodmoulds, pilasters, and decoratively carved keystones. Above the doors, there are single windows with slightly arched architraves and decorative brackets at the cills. The outer bays have full-height, three-light, canted windows, while the central lights on the ground floor are segmental-arched, and the central first-floor windows above have plain, tapering aprons.

The north and south elevations feature single-storey wings with attics on the east bays that protrude to the rear of the house. The windows at No 9 are timber, sash and case, while No 7 has modern replacement pivot windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with slate roofs on the attics of the wings. The building also features coursed, coped wallhead stacks and canted, pedimented dormers flanking a coped central ridge stack.
