Description

This building, located at 13 Marchhall Crescent in Edinburgh, dates from around 1880 and is a two-storey, four-bay symmetrical double villa featuring distinctive architectural details. It has single-storey wings with attics that adjoin the house on either side and extend to the rear. The exterior is constructed of red sandstone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings on the main façade, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked rubble. Notable features include a base course, a cill course between the canted bays on the first floor windows, and carved circular panels with an engaged sphere motif at the centre of the cill course and on the canted bays. A deep cornice completes the design.

On the west (entrance) elevation, there are doorways in the two central bays, featuring panelled doors (with a two-leaf door for No 11), round-arched plate glass fanlights, and segmental-arched bracketed hoodmoulds. The doorpieces include pilasters and decoratively carved keystones. Above the doorways are single windows with slightly arched architraves, while the outer bays feature full-height, three-light canted windows.

The north and south elevations have single-storey wings with attics on the eastern bays that protrude to the rear of the house. The windows are made of plate glass and timber, in a sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with slate roofs on the attics of the single-storey wings. A rendered, coped wallhead stack is located on the north side, and there are canted, pedimented dormers flanking a coped central ridge stack. A modern garage adjoining No 13 is not included in the listing.
