Description
4 Priestfield Road in Edinburgh is a pair of symmetrical houses built around 1880. They are two stories tall and have four bays. The front is made of coursed cream sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Notable architectural features include a base course, long and short ashlar quoins, and shouldered architraves on the first-floor single windows. There is a cill course for the first-floor windows located between the canted bays, a deep cornice, a mutual skewputt, and decorative chip-carved details.
The north elevation, which is the entrance side, features doorways in the two central bays with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The doorpieces are bracketed and have intricately carved floral designs on the pediments. Above these doors, there are segmental-arched single windows with bracketed cills, and the right window has a scroll motif on its architrave. The outer bays have full-height, three-light canted windows that break the eaves, and there is a decorative carved frieze above the first floor along with cast-iron finials on the roof. A box dormer is present on No. 2.
On the east and west elevations, there are central round-arched stair windows on the first floor, with single windows in the southern bays. The north side features canted dormers.
The south elevation includes single-storey extensions to the outer bays, with regular fenestration above and in the central bays. The windows are made of plate glass and timber, with sash and case designs. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped and rendered wallhead stacks as well as a coped ridge stack.
