Description

53-54 Bruntsfield Place is a plain classical villa built between 1826 and 1827. It is two stories high with a three-bay symmetrical rectangular plan and features a single-storey wing on the left. The villa is constructed from polished sandstone ashlar, which is channelled at the ground level, while the sides and rear are made of coursed rubble at the first floor. Notable architectural details include a base course, a dividing band course, a cill course, a cornice, and a blocking course that is advanced at the center. The windows on the ground floor are set in arched recesses, and the first-floor windows are architraved.

The entrance elevation features a pilastered entrance with a four-panelled timber door and a round-arched plate glass fanlight. Above the entrance, there is a single window on the first floor, with additional windows on both floors of the flanking bays. The wing has a six-panelled timber door with a geometric glazing pattern in the fanlight, also set in an arched recess.

The villa has two-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof, with corniced wallhead stacks that have moulded cans. Decorative cast-iron railings flank the entrance.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a coped, coursed rubble wall along the street with replacement railings, as well as coursed rubble mutual boundary walls, which are also coped.
