Description

This building, located at 55 and 56 Bruntsfield Place in Edinburgh, is a plain classical villa constructed between 1826 and 1827. It is two stories high, features a three-bay symmetrical rectangular plan, and has single-storey wings. The exterior is made of polished sandstone ashlar, which is channelled at the ground level, while the sides are finished with coursed rubble. Architectural details include a base course, a string course at the ground floor, a dividing band course, a cill course, a cornice, and a blocking course that is advanced at the center. The first-floor windows are architraved.

On the entrance elevation, there is a pilastered central doorway with a boarded timber door that has decorative strap hinges. Above the door is a round-arched plate glass fanlight. The first floor features a single window above the entrance, and there are single windows in recessed round-arched panels in the flanking bays at ground level. The right wing has a two-light window, while the left wing has a timber door, both set within round-arched panels.

The villa is fitted with 2-pane timber sash and case windows, although there is a PVCu window in the right wing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with corniced wallhead stacks that have moulded cans.

The interior was not seen during the last assessment in 1997. The property is enclosed by low coped rubble boundary walls along the street, with mutual coped coursed rubble boundary walls.
