Description

This building is a classical villa from the early 19th century, located at 17 Academy Street in Leith, Edinburgh. It is two storeys high with an attic and features a symmetrical five-bay design. A large modern extension has been added in the front garden.

The exterior is made of cream sandstone, with squared and snecked rubble at the basement, stugged ashlar with polished dressings above, and coursed and squared rubble on the rear and sides. There is a band course above the basement and ground floor, a dentilled eaves cornice with a blocking course, blind balustraded aprons beneath the ground floor windows, and architraved windows.

On the front elevation, there is a Roman Doric columned doorpiece at the centre, adorned with an acanthus leaf neckband and a marbled paterae frieze, framed by a black marbled door surround that is accessed by steps. There are single windows above on the first floor and in the remaining bays.

The rear elevation features a central stair window flanked by single windows, along with a rooflight. The southwest elevation has a gabled design with an ashlar apex stack, single windows in the centre bay, and a small window to the left. The northeast elevation is also gabled with an ashlar apex stack, with blocked single windows at the first floor and a small window at the gablehead.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, mostly with plate glass glazing, although some have 12 panes on the rear and side, with one replacement window on the front elevation. The roof is slate with lead flashing and has two apex stacks. The skews are ashlar coped, and there are moulded gutter heads. The interior was not seen in 1993.
