Description

5, 7, 9 Academy Road is an early 19th century, four-storey and attic, twelve-bay tenement located in Leith, Edinburgh. The building features a pend to the right and is constructed from cream sandstone with tooled ashlar and polished dressings on the front elevation, while the sides are made of coursed and squared rubble, and the rear is finished in coursed rubble. Architectural details include a base course, a channelled ground floor, a band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and pronounced voussoirs above the ground floor openings.

The southeast (front) elevation showcases a bowed bay containing three windows, although the center windows are blocked. To the outer right, there is a basement and a half-conical roof. A round-arched pend is located to the left, leading to a stone-flagged forecourt. The common stair and main door feature flat doorways with panelled doors and rectangular fanlights, with reproduction radial astragal patterns found at Nos 9 and 13. The remaining bays exhibit regular fenestration. The building has two short wallhead stacks and two rectangular single dormers with piended roofs.

On the northwest (rear) elevation, there is a round-arched pend and single windows. The northeast elevation has a truncated gable with paired apex stacks and narrow windows in the center bay. The building is fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The slate roof is equipped with lead flashings and includes two wallhead stacks and two apex stacks, along with mutual stacks. There is a moulded eaves gutter serving Nos 11-13a.

The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1993. The front of the building is adorned with plain arrowhead railings.
