Description

161 Constitution Street is an early 19th-century, two-storey and basement villa located in Leith, Edinburgh. This five-bay symmetrical building features classical details and is constructed from cream sandstone with a stugged ashlar front and polished dressings. The northeast elevation is made of coursed and squared rubble, while the rear and side are also finished in coursed rubble. The basement is rock-faced, and the villa has an ashlar base course, a cill band course above the first-floor windows, a dentilled eaves cornice, rusticated quoins, and architraved windows, which are corniced at the ground floor.

On the northwest (front) elevation, there is a Roman Doric pilastered and corniced doorway at the center, accessed by steps with a balustrade. The doorway features a two-leaf panelled door and a semi-circular fanlight with radial astragals. The fenestration is regular, and there are three Velux rooflights.

The northeast (Laurie Street) elevation is three bays wide and gabled, with an ashlar apex stack and a band course above the first floor. Each bay has a single window, although the center and right windows are blinded.

The southeast (rear) elevation has a nepus gable at the center, which is a later alteration, and a rectangular dormer to the right. The southwest elevation is gabled with an ashlar apex stack and features a window to the left.

The villa has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with lead flashings, and two corniced apex stacks. The skews are coped.

The interior was not seen in 1993. Additionally, there is a tall rubble boundary wall along Laurie Street, which includes red sandstone gatepiers.
