Description

1, 3, 5 Duke Street is an early 19th-century, four-storey classical corner tenement located in Leith, Edinburgh. The building features a bowed end bay and shops on the ground floor. It is constructed of cream ashlar stone, with droved ashlar on the main elevations, while the rear is finished in render and coursed rubble. There is a cill band course at the first, second, and third floors, along with a cornice above the ground floor, except for No. 3, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course.

On the southwest elevation facing Duke Street, the building has a four-bay design with a four-storey bowed bay on the outer left. The ground floor includes a shopfront with a central doorway and roll-moulded reveals around the openings, while there are two windows on each floor above. The remaining bays feature a single shopfront, which has been doubled since 1980, adorned with moulded Ionic pilasters, an egg and dart cornice, and a gilded mortar and pestle sign. The upper floors have single windows in each bay, and there is a short wallhead stack at the center.

The northeast elevation facing Kirkgate has a three-bay design, with a common stair doorway at the center that includes a three-pane fanlight. There are shopfronts on either side, although the right side is boarded up. The upper floors have single windows in each bay, with the right bay being blocked. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with metal flashings, and two wallhead stacks.
