Description
2 Forth Street in Edinburgh is a classical corner tenement building dating from 1804. It has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with some shops on the ground floor. The building features a five-by-nine bay layout and is constructed from droved sandstone ashlar. Notable architectural details include band courses between the floors, projecting cills, a mutuled eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
On the south elevation facing Forth Street, there is a five-bay shopfront with a projecting mutule cornice. The shopfront occupies three bays on the right, featuring entrances with fanlights in the first and outer bays, and tall windows in the centre bays. To the left, rusticated bays contain windows set in round-arched recesses with an impost band. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with a piended tripartite dormer above.
The west elevation facing Broughton Street has nine bays at ground level, arranged in a grouping of three, one, and five on the sloping ground. The right side has three storeys with a basement and attic, while the left side has four storeys and an attic. There is a recessed entrance bay to the left of the centre. A four-bay corniced shopfront is located to the left, with an entrance featuring a fanlight to the right of the centre and plate glass windows in the remaining bays. The outer right bay has an entrance with a small-pane fanlight, while the third bay from the right features a tripartite window with a decorative round-arched fanlight, both with ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with two tripartite and two single piended dormers.
The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ridge stacks with terracotta cans, along with decorative cast-iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
