Description
1 Forth Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey terraced corner tenement building with a basement and attic, featuring a total of ten bays arranged in a 4-1-5 grouping. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and includes shopfronts at the ground level. The west elevation has a bow bay, a fascia band, and projecting cills at the first and second floors, along with a band course between these floors, an eaves band, and ashlar steps leading to entrance platts that overhang the basement.
On the west elevation facing Broughton Street, there are six bays at the ground level, with a door featuring a fanlight and flanking plate glass shop windows to the right of the bowed bay. Above, there are stone mullioned tripartite windows on each floor. To the right and right of centre, there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece with flanking plate glass shop windows, and regular fenestration above, including two piended dormers.
The north elevation facing Forth Street has seven bays at the ground level, with an entrance featuring a fanlight in the second bay and a blocked entrance with a fanlight in the fifth bay, while the remaining bays contain shop windows. There is rustication in the bay to the right, which has a window in a round-arched recess. The upper floors feature regular fenestration, with two three-light bowed dormers that have canted lights.
The building has timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, a roof covered in grey slates, and cast iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
