Description

This building is a former Catholic Apostolic Church, designed by probably John Dick Peddie and constructed between 1843 and 1844. It is a three-storey and basement structure with five bays, now used as a warehouse. The northeast entrance features a pedimented gable, with the central three bays recessed and divided by Ionic columns. The outer bays are framed by pilasters in antis, containing architraved windows with panelled aprons and bracketed pediments, along with architraved panels above. The recessed central bays include round-arched doorways with panelled timber doors and radial semicircular fanlights, topped by a carved architraved panel. The pediment is adorned with acroteria, and there are ashlar steps leading up to the entrance. The building has a base course and a cornice at the entablature.

On the southeast elevation facing York Lane, the building features a six-bay façade made of stugged and squared rubble. The outer right bay is recessed and framed by pilasters, with long and short quoins. The fenestration is modern, featuring broached dressings and projecting cills. There is a later rendered and coped wall to the outer left, while the outer right bay is also recessed and framed by pilasters.

The northwest elevation mirrors the southeast elevation, with the outer left bay recessed and framed by pilasters.

The southwest rear elevation consists of coursed rubble with acroteria at the apex and at both outer sides. The centre features an advanced bow with a round-arched tripartite window, and there is an infilled window to the right. A harled lean-to addition obscures the ground floor to the right of the bow.

The principal elevation has plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the side elevations have modern plate glass windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. A rendered stack breaks the pitch of the roof and is coped with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998, but it has been converted and subdivided for office accommodation. The property also features ashlar copes topped with iron railings, along with a gate made of iron railings and square-plan piers.
