Description
46 Bruntsfield Place is a plain classical villa built between 1826 and 1827. It has two storeys and a basement, with a symmetrical rectangular plan and three bays, along with single-storey wing walls. The exterior is made of polished sandstone ashlar, channelled at the ground level and droved at the basement, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble. There is a base course at the basement and ground floor, a string course at the ground floor, a dividing band course, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course that is advanced at the center.
On the entrance elevation, steps lead up to a pilastered entrance featuring a stone lintel and a four-panelled timber door with an umbrella fanlight above. Below, there is a six-panelled timber entrance door to the basement, with a single window above and in both floors of the flanking bays, as well as in the basement. To the left, there is an architraved pedestrian gateway with a timber door in the wing wall, and to the right, a two-leaf timber garage door with six glass panels and a rendered concrete lintel. The villa has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate piended roof with coped wallhead stacks topped with corniced cans. Original cast-iron railings lead up the steps, with modern bracketed lamps attached to the pilasters.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of coped, coursed rubble to the street, with replacement railings and gates, as well as coped, coursed rubble flanking walls.
