Description

6 Bruntsfield Terrace is a pre-1858, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan villa located in Edinburgh, featuring extensions to the rear and side. The building is constructed of grey sandstone with a stugged ashlar front, while the rear and sides are made of squared and snecked rubble, also with stugged rubble margins on the side extension. It has a base course, an eaves cornice on the front and northwest elevation, bracketed cills, and ornamental wrought-iron window guards on the single windows at the front elevation.

The northeast (front) elevation has three bays and features a central Greek Doric ashlar entrance porch with a frieze inscribed 'BRUNTSFIELD HOUSE', a blocking course with a bearing tablet, a two-leaf panelled door, and a rectangular plate glass fanlight. Above the porch, there is a single window on the first floor. To the left, there is a full-height canted window with stop-chamfered reveals and a half-piended roof, which is a later addition. The right bay contains a corniced single window at the ground floor and another single window on the first floor. There is also a recessed two-storey single-bay addition on the outer left, which has a secondary door flanked by a small window at the ground floor and a single cornice window on the first floor.

The southwest (rear) elevation features a gabled bay to the right, with five windows at the ground floor and four windows at the first floor. There is an entrance door left of centre, accessed by a modern cast-iron spiral stair, and a large modern single-storey extension to the right. The northwest elevation has a single window at the ground floor and a central wallhead stack. The windows are timber sash and case, with two-pane upper sashes and four-pane lower sashes. The roof is piended with slate and metal flashings, featuring two wallhead stacks to the northwest and southeast, both with distinctive square cans.

The interior was not seen in 1992. The property is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall with saddlebank coping at the front, a dividing wall with two gates to the left, and a high rubble wall with semi-circular coping at the rear and sides.
