Description

This building, located at 7 Newbattle Terrace in Morningside, Edinburgh, dates from around 1850 and is a two-storey, three-bay villa with a rectangular plan. It is constructed of grey sandstone, featuring a stugged ashlar front with polished dressings, while the rear and sides are made of squared and snecked stugged ashlar. The windows are architraved with ashlar mullions, and there is a cornice at the eaves.

On the south (front) elevation, there is a corniced doorway at the center, flanked by plain pilasters, leading to a panelled door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight above. A single window is located on the first floor above the doorway. The outer bays feature corniced tripartite windows at the ground floor, with single windows above on the first floor. To the outer right, there is a single-storey flat-roofed addition.

The north (rear) elevation has a projecting bay on the left with broad windows, while the remaining bays contain single windows. There is also a single-storey flat-roofed addition in the re-entrant angle and a single flue wallhead stack.

On the west elevation, there is a modern lean-to entrance porch and two corniced wallhead stacks. The east elevation features a single-storey addition at the ground floor and two corniced wallhead stacks.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass glazing on the front and 8-pane windows on the rear. The roof is piended slate with metal flashings, and there are five wallhead stacks with octagonal cans. The building has a moulded eaves gutter. The interior was not seen in 1992.

Surrounding the property, there is a tall rubble wall with semi-circular coping on the rear and sides, a lower wall at the front, and cast-iron gateposts with later gates.
