Dominion Cinema, 18 Newbattle Terrace, Morningside, Edinburgh

The Dominion Cinema, located at 18 Newbattle Terrace in Morningside, Edinburgh, was designed by T Bowhill Gibson and built between 1937 and 1939. This large, flat-roofed moderne cinema features an off-centre stylised advertising tower. The structure has a steel frame with brick infill, faced in Craighall cast stone and coloured pebble dash cement render.

On the north (front) elevation, the ground floor is adorned with variegated marble and includes a stylised solid marble balustrade. There are four oak doors with sand-blasted acid-etched glass panels depicting sun-rays and Indian plumes, flanked by panels of stained glass peacocks. Above, a large projecting steel and timber canopy is present. The elevation also features seven tall vertical strip windows, which are now blocked, and a band course below the eaves level. The recessed rendered top storey has a continuous row of windows divided by cast stone mullions. The tall stylised off-set advertising tower is positioned off-centre to the right and includes a projecting clock and sign board. The outer right lower wall plane is designed as an advertising board.

Inside, the main auditorium has been subdivided horizontally and converted into two cinemas. The original stylised panelling remains on the ceiling and side walls.
